Super 8 is a 2011 American science fiction thriller film written, co-produced, and directed by J. J. Abrams and produced by Steven Spielberg. The film stars Joel Courtney, Elle Fanning and Kyle Chandler and tells the story of a group of young teenagers who are filming their own Super 8 movie when a train derails, releasing a dangerous presence into their town. The movie was filmed in Weirton, West Virginia and surrounding areas.

Super 8 was released on June 10, 2011, in conventional and IMAX theaters in the United States. The film was well received, with critics praising the film for its nostalgia, visual effects, musical score, and for the performances of its young actors, particularly those of Fanning and newcomer Courtney. It was also a commercial success, grossing over $260 million against a $50 million budget. The film received several awards and nominations; primarily in technical and special effects categories, Giacchino’s musical score, as well as for Courtney and Fanning’s performances as the film’s two young leads.

Super 8 takes place in 1979 and revolves around a group of children filming a zombie movie when a train derails and unleashes a monster in the town of Lillian, Ohio. Super 8 is produced by Steven Spielberg and Amblin Entertainment and written and directed by J.J. Abrams.

Super 8 was the movie I was looking forward to the most this summer with its’ inventive marketing and secrecy over the monster and what it looked like, much like Cloverfield, one of my favorite movies of the last decade. And let me tell you right now, this movie doesn’t disappoint at all. I was in love with every second of this film, it’s a great nostalgia film that homages Spielberg’s Close Encounters and E.T.

In a way, I’d like to consider Super 8 as the end of an alien trilogy with Encounters and E.T. . The young cast including Elle Fanning and newcomer Joel Courtney are both great on screen and Kyle Chandler, best known as the head coach of the Friday Night Lights TV series, also does a great job in the film as the lead boy’s father. The monster in the film also looks very impressive and was not the disappointment I was afraid it was going to be. In a way, it kind of looks like the Cloverfield monster. The visual look of the film is very fascinating and the film does look like it was made in the late 1970s.

Also, the film’s score done by the great Michael Giacchino is also well done. The score is the second best score that I’ve heard in the last few years behind Daft Punk’s Tron Legacy score. But the best thing that I can say about this movie is that it has the perfect ending. It doesn’t bullshit out a way to continue the story on this alien, it has the perfect ending.

Super 8 is a wonderful action packed movie and a perfect film with no flaws in it at all.
