The Following Preview… #64: Kong: Skull Island

Tonight on Jimmy Kimmel Live, the brand new trailer for Kong: Skull Island was released. The new revamp of the King Kong franchise stars Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Corey Hawkins, Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman, and John C. Reilly and opens March 10th:

First thing I’ll bring up, I’m a little disappointed that they just threw Kong out into the spotlight right away in this trailer, it’s not even 30 seconds in and already, we get a full on shot of King Kong right off the bat. Usually, they save that for the end with just little hints and brief glimpses before the reveal of the creature but here, it’s like, let’s get him out there now.

But with that said, I’m really loving the hell out of everything I’m seeing from this trailer. Kong himself looks really spectacular and I really love the creatures in this, a lot of these designs are actually pretty genuinely terrifying and downright scary. The shots of Kong in the fire are brilliantly handled and just show the menace of how dangerous and scary this creature really is.

You can definitely see the homages to different movies, there’s a bit of Mad Max, there’s a bit of Predator, there’s a bit of Apocalypse Now, there’s even a little bit of Tropic Thunder with the comedic elements centering around John C. Reilly’s character…which is probably the one flaw with this trailer, there’s too many bits of comedy in what is suppose to be a more serious and more action packed movie. The skullcrushers line is like something you’d expect Reilly to say in Step Brothers, not a King Kong movie.

There’s even a little bit of homage to the original 1933 King Kong movie, that scene in the nighttime with Kong looking at Hiddleston and Larson kind of looks like how they would’ve shot it back then where you had an film strip of the live-action actor and the model of Kong next to each other except here, the monster is clearly CG.

The mocap work on Kong is also pretty good too, the actor is Terry Notary, a stunt performer who has worked on both Planet Of The Apes recent reboots, Warcraft, The Hobbit trilogy and many more and it’ll be interesting to see how he does to try to become the new Andy Serkis or hell, even Benedict Cumberbatch.

There’s really a whole lot to admire from this movie, I really loved the Godzilla reboot from a couple of years back and if this movie ends up being as good as that was, this crossover Godzilla King Kong movie on the way could get more and more exciting than it did before. I’m really excited for this one, March is gonna be a really damn good month for movies this year, Logan, Beauty & The Beast, Ghost In The Shell, and now this, 2017 is already looking like it’s heading off to a very promising start.
