VALENTINE’S DAY ** (2010)
Like He’s Just Not That Into You, this movie is set around various people, all of which are big named actors, including (and I mean including) Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel, Anne Hathaway, Jamie Foxx, Topher Grace, Patrick Dempsey, Jennifer Garner, and Julia Roberts plus a number of others including Bradley Cooper, Eric Dane, Emma Roberts, Taylor Swift, Taylor Lautner, Queen Latifah, and so many more, on the biggest day for couples, Valentine’s Day.
From what I have heard, a lot of people have trashed this movie. However, I actually think the movie is OK. I saw this in a packed theater of couples on Valentine’s Day…now that I think about it, I should have probably went with someone else.
Anyway, there are some good things about the movie and there are some bad things. The film’s two strongest characters are both Ashton Kutcher and Jamie Foxx with Foxx easily being the best person in the whole film. And also, the reason I went to see this film was because I wanted to see if both Taylor Lautner & Taylor Swift could act and for what they did here, I say yes. Especially Lautner who, while he was not fantastic, he definitely proves that he can do other movies outside of the Twilight films. Swift, doing a good job as Lautner’s ditzy girlfriend, continuing to prove to herself that she can be a good actor like she did on SNL and on CSI.
Some of the bad things I have for this film include George Lopez. I don’t think his character should have been in this movie because there’s no use for him except for comedy relief. My major complaint for this movie is that there are two stories that don’t have a happy ending. Now one I can understand, Patrick Dempsey’s character, a married man, has an affair with Jennifer Garner and Garner gets her revenge and Dempsey is left with no one to love on Valentine’s Day. That I can understand that he shouldn’t deserve a happy ending.
But Jessica Alba’s character, her character is really misused in this movie and she’s getting punished for no reason at all. Just because she’s not ready for commitment from her boyfriend Ashton Kutcher, she doesn’t deserve a happy ending from someone else? I’m a guy but that is bullshit.
I’m so sick of these movies and TV shows where they force people to get married and have kids. Stop telling people what to do and let them go on with their own goddamn lives. Wow, I have anger issues.
But anyway, Valentine’s Day is not a great romantic comedy but it’s not one of the worst movies of the year, I can name 3 movies that have come out this year that I can consider some of the worst movies of the year: Legion, Leap Year, and When In Rome. There are some good performances in here with Foxx leading the pack but there aren’t that many laughs.
A VERY HAROLD & KUMAR 3D CHRISTMAS **** (2011)
Six years have elapsed since their last adventure, leaving Harold and Kumar (John Cho and Kal Penn) estranged from one another with very different families, friends, and lives. But when Kumar arrives on Harold’s doorstep during the holiday season with a mysterious package in hand, he accidentally burns down Harold’s father-in-law’s (Danny Trejo) beloved Christmas tree. To fix the problem, Harold and Kumar embark on a mission through New York City to find the perfect Christmas tree, once again stumbling into trouble at every single turn. The first Harold & Kumar movie, Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle, is a new comedy classic in the making. The second movie, Escape from Guantanamo Bay, is a mediocre comedy sequel. This movie is funny as hell. Much like the last movie, there are a lot of hit and miss moments but here, there are much more hits than misses. The 3D is pretty impressive and reminded me somewhat of Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World in a way, which wasn’t released in 3D. The comedy works really well here, the raunchy jokes are used very nicely, and it’s nicely paced and not too long. And of course, I can’t forget about Neil Patrick Harris. I’ve been saying for years now that this guy is fucking hilarious. He’s a great comic and a pretty damn good singer. In this movie, he shines here and every bit of the comedy they give him is great. However, the special effects do seem very fake and poorly done. The effects in this movie are on the level of G.I. Joe and (and I know I’m going to get complaints about this) X-Men: First Class. They look so fake. The film does manage to provide both a compelling and funny look at the spirit of Christmas and the purpose of friendship and also dealing with growing up and dealing with becoming a parent. A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas is very funny and it does a really good job at hammering Christmas into the storyline. If there’s any new holiday movie released this year that’s going to get you excited for Christmas, it’s going to be this movie.
