The Following Preview… #76: Thor: Ragnarok

Marvel has debuted the brand new teaser trailer for Thor: Ragnarok, the third installment of the Thor franchise which will open up on November 3rd:

After the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron, Thor, held captive on the planet Sakaar without his hammer, must win a gladiatorial duel against an old friend — the Hulk — in order to return to Asgard in time to stop the villainous Hela and the impending Ragnarök, the doom of the Asgardian civilization.

From the moment this trailer begins, you can tell that the Thor franchise is taking more of a comedic approach again on the level of Guardians Of The Galaxy while also throwing in some of those incredible trippy visuals like Doctor Strange.

I’m glad that we’re seeing something radically different for this series of films because the Thor movies are the only series of the films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that have been the least enjoyable of the films released. The first Thor, I still think, is the worst of the MCU movies while Thor: The Dark World is slightly better but much darker than it needed to be. It’s like that they never had a true idea of what they wanted to do with the Thor movies, did they want to be taken seriously? Did they want to be funny? Did they want it to be more tongue-in-cheek?

With this, I think they finally have come to the conclusion that these films should be more tongue-in-cheek, that they should be more funny, that they should be more like Guardians Of The Galaxy, and if that’s the case, I really think they made the right call here because a lot of what I’m seeing here is impressive.

Not only are the visuals impressive here but those more comedic elements are what make me want to see this a lot more. I mean, when Thor sees Hulk for the first time and the way his reaction is presented, I had a good hard laugh watching that, like if we get more moments like that in this, this could be a really good movie.

My only real complaint is a major complaint that most people have with the MCU and that’s the villain. Cate Blanchett is playing Hela in this and while she looks pretty cool, she’s looking a little too much like a mix of Sofia Boutella’s The Mummy and Harlem Shake Enchantress from Suicide Squad and the biggest problems with Marvel’s villains is that they are usually very one sided and not memorable at all. I mean, the only three MCU villains that I do genuinely like are Loki, Red Skull, and Ultron, everybody else has ranged from okay to meh. And I get the feeling that Hela will join those ranks too unless they really wow us with something from her this time around.

Overall, I’m pumped for Thor: Ragnarok, I think they have a lot of great energy and humor being thrown into this, it looks visually impressive, it looks like they are finally finding the right call to take with these movies and hopefully, we can finally get that great Thor movie that I think this character deserves, we love the character so much but when it comes to his movies, not so much, hopefully this will be the one that bucks the trend in the right direction.
