Talking Simpsons #486: The Boys Of Bummer

The Boys Of Bummer, the 18th episode of season 18 and the 396th overall, was first broadcasted on April 29, 2007 with a script by Michael Price and directed by Rob Oliver.

Bart becomes a town pariah (once again) after losing the championship for Springfield’s Little League team, and is driven insane to the point of suicide from constant harassment. Meanwhile, Homer gets a job at Costington’s Department store as a mattress tester, and finds a mattress that he wants to keep for himself after it reignites his stagnant love life with Marge.

Okay, that’s a good premise here and a chance to satirize those people who get so obsessed into sports that one little mistake turns the team into the biggest enemy of the town but this episode couldn’t find the humor and the satirical elements that a story like clearly has. 75% of this episode is nothing but the town hating on Bart because of this one little mishap and there’s no humor to it, the joke to this subplot is just “hey, that kid ruined a chance to win a championship, let’s shun him for the rest of his life” and that’s it. I mean, what’s the point? And then, the final act which thinks that it’s trying to be funny doesn’t make a lick of sense at all and creates a massive plothole in the process.

This whole episode was pretty much set up as a success, all you needed was a good writer to make it work but they couldn’t do that. The whole episode takes something that should be so simple and makes it more complicated by making it more one-sided and centered on just one long overplayed joke. That’s it, that’s why this episode fails, you took something so simple and just made it more complicated than it has any right to be. What a waste of an episode this was.
