Talking Simpsons #503: That 90’s Show

OH GOD, this episode, welcome to That 90’s Show, the 11th episode of season 19 and the 411th overall, first broadcasted on January 27, 2008 with a script by Matt Selman and directed by Mark Kirkland.

After discovering Marge’s diploma, Homer recounts the time he gave up his dreams of being a musician just to put Marge through college — until Marge breaks Homer’s heart and falls for her professor.

This really is the worst episode of the series and it’s because of one important thing…it fucks up the continuity that was already set up and sealed.

After discovering Marge’s diploma, Homer recounts the time he gave up his dreams of being a musician just to put Marge through college — until Marge breaks Homer’s heart and falls for her professor.

The episode significantly retcons some of the Simpson family history, depicting the timeframe of Homer and Marge’s romance as being in the 1990s due to the show’s long run, as opposed to the late 1970s and early 1980s setting in the early episodes, though later episodes would return to the latter setting.

AND that’s why this is the worst episode of the series because it fucks up everything that had already been set up at that point and pretty much sealed up. We could believe everything that had happened before this episode but this episode has nothing believable here at all because we already know what The Simpsons were doing during the ’90s.

Brad Bird, who worked on The Simpsons during the early years, said that they shouldn’t do so many of these flashback episodes down the road because it wouldn’t make much sense afterwards and this is where that logic perfectly makes sense.

We can’t buy into any of what happens here because we already know this is completely ridiculous.

Not to mention, nothing about the episode makes any sense and a lot of the story is taken from other episodes too, not just the flashback episodes but they steal the plot from Homer’s Barbershop Quartet.

Not even the awesomeness of ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic’s cameo could save this stinking ship of an episode, this is the definitive bottom of the barrel for the series and without a doubt, the worst episode of the entire series that is The Simpsons.
