Talking Simpsons #511: Mona Leaves-a

Mona Leaves-a, the 19th episode of season 19 and the 419th overall, was first broadcasted on Mother’s Day, May 11, 2008 with a script by Joel H. Cohen and directed by Mike B. Anderson and Ralph Sosa.

Mona Simpson, Homer’s ’60s radical mother, returns, vowing that her days of protesting are over, but Homer will not accept. Things get worse when Mona dies and her last wishes are to have her ashes spread over the mountains, which turns out to be a plot in stopping a nuclear disaster.

The biggest problem with this episode is that it should’ve been a whole lot better than it actually is. Mona is not really given a whole lot to do in this episode except to just keel over and die, it’s one of the first times you really feel like she’s being brought in here for just a dramatic effect. I really think the entire episode could’ve been a whole lot better had the script been better written although the scene where Homer does find her dead is very heartbreaking and Dan Castellenta’s performance in that scene is nicely done.

More moments like that would’ve easily helped this episode live up to Mona’s prior appearances but as it stands, it’s just kind of mediocre.
