Waverly Hills, 9-0-2-1-D’oh is the 19th episode of season 20 and the 439th overall, first broadcasted on May 3, 2009 with a script by J. Stewart Burns and directed by Michael Polcino.
While desperately searching for a bathroom during her morning jog, Marge discovers how low-rent Springfield Elementary School really is and moves Bart and Lisa to Waverly Hills Elementary by having Homer rent an apartment there so the city inspector of Waverly Hills does not get suspicious. Meanwhile, Bart helps Lisa become popular by telling others that Lisa is friends with a teenage pop star named Alaska Nebraska.
I…..really do not know how to fully utilize this episode, in a way, it has its’ funny moments BUT at the same time, my god, the date stamp references really set this one back in a big way. And like two obvious date stamp references come to mind in one character trait, Juno AND Hannah Montana, nevermind the fact that they got Ellen Page to play Alaska Nebraska but making her personality like Juno’s, it just doesn’t seem like they were going for something that could hold up a decade from now but to just get something out there for the timeperiod.
No more clearer is that with the No Country For Old Men reference where the city inspector for Waverly Hills is Anton Chigui….and that’s it, there’s no other joke except that it’s Anton Chigui, the character played by Javier Bardem in No Country For Old Men (only this time it’s Maurice LaMarche admittedly doing a funny parody), but there’s no other joke to it. I mean, what’s the point of even doing a joke other than to be relevant to the timeperiod. It just doesn’t make sense.
Like most of this episode, there are funny moments but the overall episode can’t figure out an overall tone or direction to make it work as a whole.
