My Take On… #244: Does Madden 18 Really Need A Story Mode?

It is August and you know what that means? Football season is almost here and with football season coming, that means another installment in the long-running Madden video game franchise is on the way in Madden 18:

And judging by the last half of this trailer, you can see that now there’s a gigantic change in this game, a story mode entitled The Longshot:

So, yeah, not only are we getting a story in this new Madden game but one with a recognizable actor at the helm, that’s Mahershala Ali playing Devin’s father in the story so they are putting a lot of money and effort into this new feature.

Madden NFL 18 will introduce a story mode known as Longshot, which follows Devin Wade, a quarterback from Mathis, Texas, as he tries to reach the NFL, and will include high school games and college games, as well as the NFL Scouting Combine. It will be the first game in the series to use the Frostbite engine.

So, now a big question comes into mind, does Madden 18 really need a story mode to it?

You can look at this new addition as both a positive and a negative addition to the game franchise.

On the one hand, it’s an good idea to bring the player something new so that they won’t look at Madden 18 as just another clone of the previous year’s game just with the current rosters for each team and some slightly new game mechanics so in a way, it helps to allow some variety to let people know that aren’t getting just the same thing as last time.

But then again, is the story mode really necessary? I mean, most people who play the Madden game usually want to play the game to play the NFL games themselves, does EA really have something here than will change the way people look at these games and will want to play the story mode. For some, the promise of actually playing high school and college football games leads to a lot of potential to see how high school and college football would look like under the Madden game format but then again, they could just be teasing it as just something that happens only a little bit in the game and you won’t get to play a full version of it.

I mean, I don’t know, I can only see Madden 18 having a story mode if the effort is put into there, there’s still good gameplay and a good story to follow. If not, 9 times out of 10 I will most likely be just focusing on the NFL games themselves. We’ll find out in about two weeks.
