More To Say #143: Last Christmas

Last Christmas is a 2019 British romantic comedy film directed by Paul Feig and written by Bryony Kimmings and Emma Thompson, who co-wrote the story with her husband, Greg Wise. Based on the song of the same name, and inspired by the music of George Michael, the film stars Emilia Clarke as a disillusioned Christmas store worker who forms a relationship with a mysterious man (Henry Golding) and begins to fall for him; Thompson and Michelle Yeoh also star.

Emilia Clarke (HBO’s Game of Thrones), Henry Golding (A Simple Favor, Crazy Rich Asians), Michelle Yeoh and Emma Thompson star for director Paul Feig (A Simple Favor, Spy, Bridesmaids) in the romantic comedy Last Christmas, with a screenplay by Academy Award® winner Thompson (Sense and Sensibility, Bridget Jones’s Baby) and playwright Bryony Kimmings.

Kate (Emilia Clarke) harumphs around London, a bundle of bad decisions accompanied by the jangle of bells on her shoes, another irritating consequence from her job as an elf in a year-round Christmas shop. Tom (Henry Golding) seems too good to be true when he walks into her life and starts to see through so many of Kate’s barriers. As London transforms into the most wonderful time of the year, nothing should work for these two. But sometimes, you gotta let the snow fall where it may, you gotta listen to your heart.

Last Christmas features the music of George Michael, including the bittersweet holiday classic of the film’s title. The film will also premiere brand new unreleased material by the legendary Grammy-winning artist, who sold more than 115 million albums and recorded 10 No. 1 singles over the course of his iconic career.

The film is produced by BAFTA winner David Livingstone for Calamity Films, by Emma Thompson, and by Paul Feig and Jessie Henderson for Feigco Entertainment. The film is executive produced by Sarah Bradshaw.

Lousy script overshadows very good performances from Emilia Clarke and especially Michelle Yeoh, good direction, and a better second half than the first half.

The biggest problems this movie has is that, for one thing, the trailer really does give everything away including the twist which, let’s be honest, it’s a pretty lackluster twist. I’m not gonna spoil it here because it’s still playing in theaters as of this post date but once you see what it’s building up to it, you’re going feel let down.

Last Christmas is overall a gigantic disappointment especially on the talent here, Paul Feig, who was coming off maybe his best film as a director with A Simple Favor last year, Emma Thompson, who hardly ever turns in a bad script, the cast who are trying their best to work with this, and a waste of using George Michael’s music. There is really nothing about this movie that would’ve been seen outside of Lifetime or Hallmark as a cheesy lazy Christmas movie except for the higher caliber of talent on board.

Certainly not one of the worst Christmas movies ever but definitely one of the biggest letdowns of recent memory, at a rental it’s fine for what it is but this doesn’t work on a big screen unfortunately.
