Talking Simpsons #677: The Incredible Lightness Of Being A Baby

The Incredible Lightness Of Being A Baby was written by Tom Gamill & Max Pross and directed by Bob Anderson.

Cletus becomes an oil tycoon; Maggie reunites with baby Hudson.

The main premise of the episode centers around a continuation of the Playdate With Destinyshort with Maggie and Hudson sharing a storyline of their expanded relationship and to me, that’s the strongest part of the episode as a whole because like in the short, the Maggie-Hudson relationship is enjoyable to watch and leads to a lot more funnier moments in the episode with the two than the ones in the short, even though the short is still really good and once again, highly recommend it.

Even though Marge getting involved and cutting off the relationship because she couldn’t stand Hudson’s mom midway through the episode genuinely did make me mad and that’s saying something when a character on The Simpsons can do something so despicable to somebody that it causes me to get angry, it’s been a good long while since that’s happened, probably since Pay Pal when, of all people, Marge made Lisa so mad that Lisa’s new friend was paid by Marge to be friends with her, that was cold and here, what she does to Maggie midway through made me just as upset but in the end, this episode resolves itself fairly nicely albeit very quickly too.

I also really like the callbacks to the shorts themselves, not just Playdate With Destiny but also Longest Daycare in one of the episode’s funniest moments:

Homer’s subplot with Cletus is okay but nothing too incredible or spectacular as a whole. It’s got some funny moments here and there but again, nothing too impressive about it.

Some of the interesting elements of the episode to me were that neither Bart nor Lisa were in the episode at all, which I don’t think that’s ever happened in the series where the entire family doesn’t show up at one point in the episode. Don’t quote me on that but I believe that’s the case.

I like how the opening intros acknowledged the quarantine due to the Coronavirus pandemic with them cutting inside the school where Bart would usually be writing on the chalkboard but instead it says on the chalkboard “school online” and there’s nobody in the school and on top of that, you get another exceptional couch gag from Michel Socha who also did the Homer’s brain one as well as the Ikea-esque instructions gag from a few years back, he delivers another winning one here:

Overall, The Incredible Lightness Of Being A Baby was a really great episode and is in a very close battle with Bart The Bad Guy as the best episode of the season so far in what has been a relatively good season for the series. It combines a lot of great elements, great jokes, good animation, a good continuation of Playdate With Destiny, good stories, and just hits all the right elements to make for a strong outing for the series, this is definitely one of the best episodes of the season by a long shot.
